Swan River Colony, Western Australia, was settled in 1829. (An outpost of NSW had been temporarily established at what is now Albany on Christmas Day 1826 ).
From 1850-1868 convicts (9,500) were sent to Western Australia. In 1889 WA became self-governing and in 1901 joined the new Commonwealth of Australia as a state.
