Edward MOBERLY was born in 1759 at Knutsford, Cheshire (England), the son of Richard and Jane (nee ADAMS). He was a merchant in St Petersburg, Russia where he married Sarah CAYLEY (the daughter of the Consul-General). When war endangered St Petersburg, the family returned to live in Ham, in England, but in 1814 things seemed safer, so Edward and Sarah and their daughters returned to Russia, leaving the boys at school in England. Later Edward was the British Consul in St Petersburg. Their children were:
- Harriet, who died in infancy
- Charles, a merchant in St Petersburg, who married Mary PORTER and later Cornelia WILKS
- John, a captain in the Royal Navy, who married Mary FOCK and emigrated to Canada
- Frances, who married Robert CATTLEY
- Henry, a lieutenant-colonel in the army, who married Henrietta BELL and later Harriet SHORTLAND
- William, who married Anna PRESCOTT
- Edward, who died in infancy
- Harriet, who married Thomas HARVEY
- Edward, a merchant in Odessa, Russia, who married Harriet SIMPSON
- Emily, who married Reverend Henry BENNETT
- Thomas, who married Dorothea CLASSON
- George, who became Headmaster of Winchester College and later was the Bishop of Salisbury (he married Mary Ann CROKAT)
- Arthur
As this family indicates, many of the MOBERLY family were distinguished soldiers or clergymen.
